The Infernal Devices [Trilogy] : Review and Discussion

I was doubting to start reading this trilogy without a reason why, I know TMI series and have read until City of Glass (not even sure why I stopped there, though I have all the books), maybe one thing that I know after I read TMI was that: I did not have any personal attachments to every characters, like strong attachments. Maybe only Clary and Jace but i forgot why so i think that was reason why I stopped reading the series.

I’ve heard about The Infernal Devices trilogy a thousands time, heard about Will Herondale, the book boyfriend that EVERYONE loves and that made me so curious about this Herondale guy (which I already know is the ancestor of Jace). I decided to read TID this year and I have finished all of it and my latest reaction is: TID RUIN MY LIIIFFEEEEEEE *sobbing uncontrollably* and yes, I understand now about Will Herondale, why people like him but I also get to know and love other characters, Tessa and Jem Carstairs. So now, let’s breakdown everything from this series shall we?

From Clockwork Angel to Prince and to Princess they all have beautiful cover and I love each cover, they are so pretty and I even have two editions of this trilogy, the new cover and the hardback (old) cover. The hardcover one of Clockwork Princess has huge spoiler, it was just a family tree of Carstairs, Herondale and Lightwood and thank goodness I didn’t see it at all (but I was dying to know what happen, who married whom and yada yada, it’s crazy guys). For each cover, they represent the main characters of this book, They guy in Clockwork Angel represents Will Herondale, they guy in Clockwork Prince represents Jem Carstairs and the girl in Clockwork Princess represents Tessa Gray.

Setting: I love the setting so much! If you guys didn’t know, I really really love Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice, so anything about Victorian era always fascinates me. I have P&P feeling by reading this series, from the dress and how Cassie wrote about how they speak, it’s how the 19th century people speak, very polite and complex conversation/words sometimes are used but I love it.

Overall Plot:

“The series takes place in London England in 1878, a short time after the peace treaties between Downworlders and Shadowhunters. As Shadowhunters consider themselves superior or purer than Downworlders or demons, they may have no qualms about killing either.

The first book in The Infernal Devices is entitled Clockwork Angel and begins the story of Tessa Gray, an orphan teenage girl who is looking for her brother Nathaniel Gray, who has disappeared, and seeks her true identity.

Her search plunges her into a world she never knew existed, and reveals talents she never knew she had. She will have to learn to master them if she wants to find her brother, and must forge an alliance with Shadowhunters if she wants to survive in this dangerous world. Many of the family names of the Shadowhunters used in The Mortal Instruments are first introduced in this series. Another character in The Infernal Devices, Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn, also plays a part in this series.

As Tessa Gray is drawn deeper into the Shadow world, and goes on the quest of finding her brother, she falls in love with two Shadowhunters–but when it comes to choosing one, trouble begins to brew and suspense finds its way into her life. She will have to learn to hide her feelings if she hopes to survive. However, as her heart rages for love but her mind is bent on saving her brother, will she hide her vulnerable side? Which of the Shadowhunters will win her heart?”

I enjoyed the overall plot and for me, this series has taught me a lot of things, from Friendship, Family, Love and even Betrayal. But the most important thing is friendship value that I learned from   the main characters, Jem, Will and Tessa. I know that many young adult novels or especially a dystopian novels has a formula called “Love Triangle”. I found it in every YA novels i have read and for some time it did work for me but for some book it’s just like a turn off for me. But this series? Cassie wrap up every thing perfectly. It’s how the love triangle stories should be done, it was so perfect and beautiful and of course, a happy ending. It involved a lot of tears (and tissues) in the last book and I swear to you guys I have never been crying that hard over a book. Ever. The other book that made me ugly crying is Champion (third book of Legend trilogy) and i still have no idea why I cried at that time and it’s the same while I read the epilogue of the third book (and there are some part in later chapter) I just burst down into tears, non stop, if you saw me crying at that time, you guys might think I just broke up with someone, but NO. It’s because of this series.

For the action scenes, it was really good and unique in a way that this was in 19th century, Victorian era and no cool tech or clothes whatsoever like in TMI series and I really love it when Will and Jem killing demons in the battle. They taught me about how really important is Parabatai. Not just some oath about being not-blood-brother but it’s more than that. It’s like a bond that can only break if either one of them dies and when it comes to a bond, it speaks from their soul. *idk what am i talking about right now, but did you get it?*

Love triangle stories: I think this love triangle stories is not like you usually found in YA novels, definitely not. Will, Tessa and Jem or I will call them The Trio, they love each other so much. We know that Will and Jem were parabatai, so they’re already best friends since they were 12 and we know how Will’s and Jem’s characters are SO DIFFERENT—OPPOSITE of each other and yet, they need each other, they understand each other and they never afraid to show affection to each other (not romantically, more like brother-bonding). Then Tessa came to their life, changed them in a good way. Look how Will’s behaviour slowly changed, how the secret or the walls that he has build for years to protect whatever secret he hold slowly coming down because he’s in love with Tessa. Jem, who is really sweet and kind to everyone and including Tessa, he can’t help but falling in love with her too. Then Tessa, she always love both of them, she has two hearts one for Will and Jem and when I read until Clockwork Prince (even until Princess) I can’t take sides, I can’t choose Will or Jem, I feel like I’m Tessa and know what she felt about both of them. There are no ‘faster’ ships sailing for either Will-Tessa or Jem-Tessa (if you know what I mean) and the ending…………. [I’ll talk about the ending AT THE END OF THIS POST]

  • Tessa Gray

She loves to read, fiction and poetry. That’s the very first thing I love about Tessa (and other book characters who loves book just like I am). She’s very smart, intelligent and ALWAYS curious about every thing, she doesn’t scare to ask something she doesn’t know. She’s caring and warm-hearted and has a strong-willed too.

  • William Herondale

FIRST IMPRESSION of Will when I started reading Clockwork Angel: sarcastic bashhtard. That only took me a moment to like him. I love sarcastic guy and plus he’s really funny with his sarcasm. He is sometimes being really mean. From the first book he was REALLY mean, even to Tessa, I felt so upset because he broke Tessa’s heart, more like spoke her in the most offensive way to a girl. It was just so mean. But then from the Clockwork Prince, I know why he was acting so mean to everyone and eventually *Thank god no real curses* he became the real Will. Still funny, still sarcastic but he’s more open to everyone.

He loves to read fiction and poetry. IS THERE NOT A REASON TO LOVE HIM? I fell in love with him immediately, I love how he had a conversation about a book, discussing a book with Tessa. DISCUSSING A BOOK. It’s so rare to find that kind of boy, or never find it i think. Will is described as a pretty young man, he has that strong cheek bone, thick eye lashes and night-blue coloured eyes. He’s the definition of a perfect person, but he has weakness too. He’s actually a broken boy character then we knew his backstory in Clockwork Prince [i like broken-boy character tho] but he has Jem by his side to cheer him and he really cares about Jem because Jem is the only family he has at the institute, i mean as his parabatai, the bond is more than that you get it?, he will do anything for the people he loves. He’s very good at words (one good thing about reading a book), he memorised quotes, so many quotes and he awares that he has a good handsome face and he’s proud of it (sometimes he’s arrogant too) BUT again, he really cares about the people he loves, his family and his friends in the institute.

Last but not least, when I read Clockwork Angel, I can’t stop thinking about Jace, because they are SO FAMILIAR (I mean I know they are related by blood) but I lovehow Jace inherits the beauty face and that sarcastic and arrogant of Will. For a few times I imagined Will as Jace (not the other way around, it’s so weird.) Did you guys remember when Jem said, if Will can play a music instrument, it’d be a piano because he has long hands and I was just like, “Is this a reference to Jace? omg”

  • James Carstairs

He is the definition of the perfect guy you will ever find in a book. He’s so kind, warm-hearted, so humble to every one he meet, he’s so good at playing a violin.  Sadly, he is addicted to yin fen which makes him very sick and almost died. He really loves Will and Tessa. I love how Jem has such a different or opposite character from Will, both of them are like magnet, like and unlike, positive and negative. Jem really really cares about Will, he knows him well (even though Will has so many secrets, he understand that too, he never pushes him to tell him anything.) I love how he made a special day for Will (it was a day when Will run away from home and left his family / the day when his sister, Ella died), he knows what that day means to Will, and he tried to do something to Will to forget or at least distract him for every year on that day such as doing demon hunting or running in the street of London or whatsoever, but that’s really shows how much Jem’s loves to Will. I cried guys. I cried when Jem say goodbye to Will when he became a Silent Brother, it’s just too much.

I’ve told you that this series made me crying so hard. It was Clockwork Princess that made me sobbing so hard until my head hurt so bad and I got swollen eyes on the next day when I woke up. It’s so worst, I didn’t expect it would turn so bad like that. It’s not about the ending that made me cry, I LOVE THE ENDING SO MUCH, the epilogue and flashback made me cry so bad, it’s how they describe Will’s death and I JUST CANT BEAR IT.

I did not realised how much do I love Will until that very description about Will’s death in June 1937. I just started crying while I read the story. It’s like I was in there too with all Herondale family and their close friends, on his death bed, remembering how funny and sarcastic Will is, how he loves his children, grandchildren so much, told them to not to trust the duck, taught them to loves paper book and singing the demon pox song, how he really loves Tessa, how they have romantic holiday in Paris, and when Jem or Brother Zachariah came to finally take Will’s last life, JEM PLAYED A GODDAMN VIOLIN I BROKE DOWN GUYS. Literally broke down into tears i just can’t handle it, it was the hardest scene in a book that i’ve ever read. But I will always remember Will Herondale in my heart, he has a special place and his death taught me that although he died because of old age, death is inevitable and it’s a part of life that for every moment you have to accept it no matter what. So, god bless your soul Will Herondale.

I love how finally Jem and Tessa reunited (I think I need to do a TMI marathon to catch up) and they finally getting married. They were so alone for almost a half centuries, without someone to love and they finally find their way back. Even Will (god bless your soul) agrees with this. They deserved to be together as much as Tessa and Will deserved to be together. That is why the reason I love how this love triangle story ended. Or probably still continue, maybe Jem and Tessa will have a child or children, and I don’t mind with it because it’s Jem and Tessa, you know?

One thing that I hope for the next instalment of Shadowhunters chronicles’ novels is that I hope I will get see Tessa and Jem again, even if they’re going to die in battle or not, I’m happy if they died in the battle, because they will later meet Will in heaven so alive or dead I’m happy for three of them.
